Private Jet Operations Suspended by the FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced new restrictions on general aviation operations in the United States, effectively halting most private jet activity at 12 major airports. The decision comes amid the ongoing government shutdown and staffing shortages among air traffic controllers. These closures, set to remain in place until at least December 31, 2025, affect many of the country’s busiest travel hubs used by private flyers and charter operators.

FAA-Impacted Airports

According to the FAA and the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), the following airports are closed to general aviation until further notice:

Airport Code
Boston Logan International KBOS
Chicago O’Hare International KORD
Dallas Fort Worth International KDFW
Denver International KDEN
George Bush Intercontinental KIAH
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta KATL
John F. Kennedy International KJFK
Los Angeles International KLAX
Newark Liberty International KEWR
Phoenix Sky Harbor International KPHX
Reagan National KDCA
Seattle-Tacoma International KSEA

What Does This Mean for Private Jet Travelers?

Only a limited number of operations are being permitted under the current FAA guidelines.
Exceptions include:

  • Based aircraft

  • Emergency and medical flights

  • Law enforcement and firefighting operations

  • Military or FAA-authorized missions

Private flyers with itineraries involving any of these airports are advised to contact their charter provider immediately to explore alternate routes or nearby general aviation airports.

Why These Restrictions Were Implemented

The FAA’s action follows weeks of flight reductions across 40 major airports due to limited staffing. Air traffic controllers have been working without pay since the start of October, leading to nationwide delays. The new measure aims to preserve safety while easing pressure on overextended personnel.

Industry Impact and Response

Private aviation companies, including major charter and management firms, have reported widespread delays and logistical challenges.
NBAA CEO Ed Bolen noted that the restrictions are “disproportionately impacting general aviation,” an industry responsible for over 1 million jobs and contributing $340 billion to the U.S. economy annually.
