How to Protect Yourself While Traveling During Covid-19

As countries around the world continue to grapple with the effects of Covid-19, many people are keen to resume their previously postponed travel plans. Whether you intend to take a road trip or include air travel on your next getaway, the CDC has a few recommendations for measures that you can take to ensure that you and your family stay safe from the Coronavirus.

Some of the CDC’s suggestions may seem obvious, but others are more subtle. All of them, however, are intended to insulate you from this aggressive virus as you begin to make your way back into society.

Domestic and international air travel may well be changed forever thanks to the events of 2020. Commercial carriers have implemented mandatory safety procedures and increased their sanitation protocols. However, traveling on a commercial airline still requires that you remain in close proximity to potentially asymptomatic infected passengers as you go through airport security and travel together to your final destination.

Here are some of the most common concerns for commercial air travel:

Other passengers

Though airports may not be as crowded as they normally would be, traveling through one puts you in close proximity with plenty of other potentially infected individuals.

Most airlines and many destinations require masks to reduce the potential for transmission and many require you to wear one at all times. Still, the risk is there, especially while onboard the plane.

Airport security Checks

Most commercial check-in processes can be automated, and passengers can now scan their own boarding passes. The TSA has worked to increase social distance as you proceed through security, but you must still interact with plenty of people on your way to the plane. Stay six feet apart from other passengers and agents as often as you can.

Touchpoints

Although the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has worked to minimize touchpoints, the security process is still riddled with them. Those TSA bins are a case in point. When you go through security, skip the bins. Place loose items in your carry-on bag so that you don’t expose your items to unnecessary touchpoints. Carry a Ziploc to hold your ID in until you’ve had a chance to disinfect it. If you’d rather skip the food offerings at the airport, you can bring your own food, too.

When you actually board the plane, you may still want to disinfect the area around your seat. Although airlines have upped their sanitation protocols, many wonder if they actually adhere to these new standards, or if they will be effective enough to keep you safe.

Why not consider private air travel?

While all of these tips will help you mitigate potential virus transmission during commercial travel, none of these strategies are guaranteed to keep you 100% safe. If contending with all of the above threats sounds exhausting and unpleasant, and you have the means to consider private air travel, now is the time do it. Private jet charters help keep you safe thanks to the following:

1. Fly into and out of smaller, regional airports with less traffic. It’s easier to maintain an acceptable social distance when you use a small, exclusive airport instead of a major hub. Nimble private jets can travel to many more destinations than larger planes because of runway restrictions. Ultimately, you have more choices to encounter fewer people.

2. Opt out of TSA screenings. Private fliers aren’t required to participate in TSA security screenings. You don’t have to worry about minimizing touchpoints or taking off your shoes because you won’t have to.

3. Board your private plane directly from a private terminal. Travel straight to the terminal, where you won’t encounter more than a few necessary personnel, and you’re on your way. Better still, some private terminals have the option to let you drive directly to your plane before takeoff, totally eliminating outside exposure.

4. Choose your traveling companions. With commercial flights, you never know who you’ll be sharing a plane with. When you fly privately, only those on the manifest—who you’ve personally invited—are allowed to share your airspace. You have the power to determine who flies with you so that you can ensure that you won’t contract the virus from people you don’t know.

5. Travel with a smaller crowd. It’s easier to more thoroughly disinfect a smaller aircraft that generally transports fewer people less frequently than commercial jets. This makes private planes safer while reducing the chances for cross-contamination.

6. Enjoy exclusive customs screenings. If you travel internationally, your passport will still need to be inspected. But when you travel privately, your documents are often checked at a separate customs facility or even while you’re on the plane, reducing or eliminating the need to enter your destination airport.

Private air travel and the convenience and exclusivity that go along with it are ideally positioned to keep you moving safely during this pandemic. Life continues to go on, and you should be able to as well.

For additional safety while onboard a private jet, you may want to consider the following tips:

1. Frequently wash your hands. Take advantage of lavatories on the plane to keep yourself safe.

2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. These are the primary entryways for the virus, so be mindful of them while onboard. Thankfully, it’s easier to do this when you have the luxury of individually climate-controlled spaces on a private plane.

3. Stay safe and make smart choices. Cover your mouth when you sneeze, and elect to travel with individuals who are also staying safe and well.
